Hello Fellow Teachers,
Welcome to the Summer Science Safari Summer Camp. We are always looking forward to the opportunity of offering our unique camp to students and teachers throughout the Greater Houston Area. We currently have camps up and running for several years at schools in the Kingwood/Humble, The Woodlands, Clear Lake City/Bay Area, and Katy Areas. After looking over the following, if you think this is something that would be of interest to you at your school, church, or community, please contact me, Joe Watson, at

As an introduction, the Summer Science Safari began in the summer of 2001 as a very local summer camp catering to students in the Kingwood/Humble, Texas, area, especially students from Riverwood Middle School. Joe Watson, along with other science teachers, developed the concept to enable young, bright future-scientists to visualize what “real science” was all about by conducting a summer camp using “field trips” to take students to places where science was actually happening. While at these venues, we would use actual experts to conduct the tours and seminars. The concept was called by one parent, “12 field trips in 5 days,” and it has kind of stuck. Over time, these professionals came to know that our students were REALLY there to learn about science…not there just to kill off a week in the summer. We have had full professors, staff engineers, and other leaders in their fields actually compete to work with our kids! Almost all of our students are in the higher levels of Science such as Honors, Pre/AP, AP, G/T, etc., at their respective schools and most participate in extra-curricular competitive activities such as Robotics, Odyssey of the Mind, Destination Imagination, Math Olympiad, and Science Olympiad. In fact, I have been involved in Science Olympiad where my schools have had 2 Texas State Championships and several National Appearances so I know what it takes to get these students motivated. Much as these competitions do, the Summer Science Safari provides these students with the opportunity to do things they could never do at school.
In order to do the things we do, we keep our numbers small—typically, limited to 13 students/weekly session. Many of our parents call our camp the best camp for science students, ever (see Testimonials page on the website)…and believe me that is high praise from the parents of these high-performing students who demand more for their students. Roughly, 40-50% of our students are returning students or their siblings.
I would also encourage you to check out the interview, linked on our website, we had with Dr. Guy Sconzo, Superintendent of Schools in Humble ISD, on Humble ISD Television. We’ve been featured the last several years on this district-sponsored program as one of the best summer programs available. Obviously, they do not let just any camp on their program!
We have 2 levels of “beginning” affiliation that can provide you with some very nice extra summer earnings and we would love talking to you about hosting our program at your school.
Again, thanks so much for visiting our site. Please let me know if you have any questions about this truly remarkable program.
